Trail mix distribution

All the items that you won't bring on the trail will be set aside and put in storage. You'll also have an opportunity to take one last shower as this is your last stop in civilization for about a week.

Go out for breakfast in Fontana Village

Shuttle to Fontana Dam

Begin Hiking, elevation 1750'. Here is a trail map

Hike 5.6 miles on the Lakeshore Trail to Lost Cove

Camp at Lost Cove,campsite 90, elevation 1760'

Possible bailout: Back to Fontana Dam

Hike about 8 miles on the Lakeshore Trail.

There will be two 500' climbs and descents today

Camp at North Shore campsite, site 81 on Mill Branch, elevation 1800'.

Possible bailout: Back to Fontana Dam

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Hike about 7 reasonably level miles on the Lakeshore Trail.

Camp at Kirkland Creek, site 76, elevation 1770'

Possible bailout: Very few good options. Fontana Dam or Lakeview Dr. are possible but far. It may be possible to evacuate by motorboat.

Hike about 9 reasonably level miles on the Lakeshore Trail..

Hike 4.1 miles up Forney Creek Trail

Camp at Jonas Creek campsite, site 70, elevation 2400'

Hike about 5.5 miles up the Forney Creek Trail.

Camp at Steeltrap Campsite, site 68, elevation 3960'.

Possible bailout: Lakeview Dr.

Saturday, April 28, 2007

Hike about 3 miles past Forney Creek Cascade to the Forney Ridge Trail.


Forney Creek Cascade

Hike 3.5 miles up to Clingman's Dome, the highest point in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, elevation 6643'.

End of hike: Clingman's Dome access road.
