Western Connecticut / Massachusetts Appalachian Trail

Last Updated: 10/20/2006

Photos

The 2200 mile long Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine. We will be hiking the beautiful stretch that spans western Connecticut and Massachusetts, during what we hope will be peak foliage season. See a wild and beautiful landscape -- within driving distance of New York City, Boston, Hartford, Springfield, and Albany -- and lose weight (or more accurately, improve body composition) in the process.

Menus

We don't believe in austere eating regimens. Because backpacking is rigorous and demanding (as well as rewarding), you must feed your body in order for it perform. Your body will dictate that you eat nutritious food often, almost continually. Please check out the planned menus for the trip.

These lists are not necessarily comprehensive and may be altered or augmented. Furthermore, if you want to bring personal food, say a big old chocolate cake, go for it. After carrying it 50+ miles through the mountains, your body will most likely not desire those empty calories, nor want to carry the weight around any longer.

Itinerary

The Fall Foliage Fatpacking Trip will be from October 7-15, 2006. Here is the proposed itinerary.

Equipment List

Here is a (currently incomplete) list of equipment we suggest you bring.

Who's Coming?

Here is a list of the participants so far. Why not get to know them before you meet them?

Cost

$750 per person double occupancy. Here, double occupancy means that you will share a tent with another trip participant. This isn't a requirement, but it will cut down on total weight carried, an important consideration. PPDO also means that you will room with someone else during hotel nights.

You will also be responsible for transportation to and from the airport or Kent, CT. Furthermore, any restaurant meals off the trail may be your responsibility. Finally, you will be responsible for any personal calls you make or receive on our satellite phone or from motel/hotel rooms.

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when backpacking. October can be a beautiful and warm month, but it can also be rainy and cold. Expect 30s at night and 60s during the day, but be prepared for frost. You can see more detailed climate information at weather.com, using Kent, CT and Great Barrington, MA as reference towns. However, expect lower temperatures at higher elevations.
