Drive into Gatlinburg or fly into Knoxville. Here is a map of the area.

We will pick you up if necessary and head to The Resort at Governor's Crossing in Seveirville, TN. 865-429-0500

Buy perishable groceries and last minute items.

Equipment shakedown and then go out for dinner in town.

All the items that you won't bring on the trail will be set aside and put in storage. You'll also have an opportunity to take one last shower as this is your last stop in civilization for about a week.

Breakfast at a local restaurant

Drive to Smokemont Ranger Station, storing final non-essential items in the car. (Thieves take note!)

Begin Hiking, elevation 2200'. Here is a trail map

Hike 5.2 Miles to Cabin Flats, elevation 3920'. Camp

Hike 6.5 miles, mostly uphill on the Dry Sluice Gap Trail to Charlie's Bunion for a strenuous day.

Turn onto the Appalachian Trail

Camp at Icewater Spring Shelter, elevation 5920'.

Possible bailout: Back to Smokemont or Kephart Prong Trail (4.5 miles)

Hike 7.5 miles.

Hike down to Newfound Gap, elevation 5048'

Hike back up to Mount Collins, elevation 5870'.

Hike 6.3 miles.

Hike up to Clingman's Dome, the highest point in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, elevation 6643'..

Hike through Silers Bald (translation: views), elevation 5607'.

Hike to Double Spring Gap, elevation 5505'.

Camp at Double Spring Gap Shelter.

Possible bailout: Newfound Gap

Hike 7.2 miles to Derrick Knob.

Camp at Derrick Knob, elevation 4890'.

Possible bailout: No good options. Closest possible bailout Miry Ridge Trail and Jakes Creek Trail to Elkmont Ranger Station, 8 miles.

Friday, September 23, 2005

Hike 6.2 miles to Spence Field.

Hike over Thunderhead Mountain, elevation 5527'.

Camp at Spence Field Shelter, elevation 4958'.

Possible bailout: No good options. Closest possible bailout Greenbriar Ridge Trail and Middle Prong Trail to Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, 8.3 miles to an unpaved road.

Hike 5.2 miles to Cades Cove.

Leave AT to hike Bote Mountain Trail.

Turn onto Anthony Creek Trail.

Hike to Cades Cove, elevation 1800'.

Possible bailout: Cades Cove.

Ride back to Maplehurst Inn B&B in Knoxville, 865-523-7773.
